Seven ways we keep children learning

Each program removes a specific barrier between a child and the classroom — from unpaid fees and missing uniforms to hunger and lost paperwork.

School Fee Support

27 pupils receiving ongoing support

The core of OGKCO's mission: direct payment of school fees for children whose families cannot afford them. Unpaid fees are the single most critical barrier to education in Eswatini — several of the children we support had been out of school for up to four years before we stepped in.

How it works

  • Identify children out of school because of fee constraints
  • Assess each family's financial capacity and the child's needs
  • Pay fees directly to the school
  • Continue coverage throughout the academic year
  • Commit to multi-year support so children can finish school

Impact

  • 27 pupils currently supported across various schools
  • Children returned to class after absences of up to four years
  • Long-term commitments through to secondary completion
  • Example: Thandeka's Form V fees committed for 2026

Uniforms & Shoes

120 pupils dressed for school

Many schools require uniforms that families simply cannot buy, and some children walk to school barefoot through winter. This program provides complete uniforms and new shoes so children can attend school with dignity and meet school requirements.

How it works

  • Identify children needing uniforms, through schools and chiefdoms
  • Assess sizes and coordinate with schools on specifications
  • Procure quality, appropriate uniforms and shoes
  • Distribute at community and school events
  • Replace uniforms as children grow

Impact

  • 120 pupils provided with school uniforms
  • 30 pupils at two primary schools given new shoes in one winter distribution
  • Improved enrolment and attendance among beneficiaries
  • Coverage of the distributions in the national press

Educational Supplies

Children cannot learn without the basics: stationery, exercise books, school bags and grade-appropriate materials. We supply them so that a lack of a pencil never keeps a child from participating in class.

How it works

  • Identify required supplies by grade level
  • Assess individual beneficiary needs
  • Coordinate with schools on supply lists
  • Buy in bulk for cost efficiency
  • Distribute directly to beneficiaries

Impact

  • Regular supply provision to beneficiaries
  • Material barriers to learning removed
  • Children able to participate fully in class

Food Assistance

A hungry child cannot learn. This program provides food support to beneficiaries and their families, making sure children have the nutrition they need for healthy development and concentration in class.

How it works

  • Assess family food security
  • Identify children at risk of malnutrition
  • Distribute food directly to families
  • Support school meals where applicable

Impact

  • Improved nutrition for beneficiaries
  • Better concentration and learning capacity
  • Reduced food insecurity in beneficiary families

Clothing & Basic Needs

Beyond the school gate, many beneficiary families lack everyday clothing, toiletries and personal care items. This program addresses material poverty at home so that children can live — not just study — with dignity.

How it works

  • Assess each family's clothing and basic needs
  • Provide age- and season-appropriate clothing
  • Supply toiletries and personal care items
  • Distribute to beneficiaries and their families

Impact

  • Improved living conditions for beneficiaries
  • Greater dignity and self-esteem
  • Better school attendance
  • More stable families

Disability Support

34+ beneficiaries receiving specialised support

Children with disabilities face additional barriers to education and everyday life. We provide comprehensive assistance to beneficiaries living with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, cognitive disabilities, mobility impairments, communication disabilities and complex needs.

How it works

  • Identify each child's specific disability and support needs
  • Arrange medical support and referrals
  • Provide specialised equipment
  • Secure educational accommodations
  • Support families and caregivers

Impact

  • 34+ children with disabilities supported
  • Improved access to inclusive education
  • Better quality of life for children and caregivers

Birth Certificate Assistance

Without a birth certificate, a child in Eswatini can be refused school enrolment and government services. Several of our beneficiaries lacked this basic document — so we help families obtain it.

How it works

  • Identify children without birth certificates
  • Help families through the application process
  • Cover certificate fees where needed
  • Advocate with government authorities
  • Follow up until the document is in hand

Impact

  • Documentation secured for multiple beneficiaries
  • School enrolment barriers removed
  • Access to government services restored
